Current setting for optimal 2300mah A123 charging? Empty Current setting for optimal 2300mah A123 charging?

On the Astro Flight A123 charger it states:"Charge A123 cells at 5 A". It was my understanding that these cells can be safely charged at a 4C rate, which is equivalent to a charge rate of 9.2 A - why the 5 A instruction?

Laughing Hi, Merf - Sorry to have taken so long, but you are the very first person to use our new 'Forum', and we had to learn how to use it ourselves, and with the help of our web master, we are now here! As a first timer, we are offering you 5% off any first time order! The answer to your question is: I'm charging my A123's at the maximum rate of the Astro Flight charger, which is approx. 8 A. The 4 cell packs peak at approx. 12 min. The 6 cell a bit longer. The reason for the 5 A instruction for charging is to give absolute longevity to the pack. Thanks for entering the forum! Pete

Oh, it was my question too, but merf was faster.

Maybe do You know, what is the average cell life with 8 Amps charging?

Thanks:

Arpi

The 5A instruction is to insure long life of the pack. I am using 8 to 10A to charge the packs in about 12 min. So far no problem, however I only have aprox. 25 or 30 cycles on the packs. Time will tell. Thanks - Pete.

Current setting for optimal 2300mah A123 charging? Empty 123 cell life

Post  Raptor Mon Sep 28, 2009 7:59 pm

On my 123 Cells that I purchased from MEC already in power tubes. I have about 60 cycles on them using an Astroflight 109. I have charged them at 6 amps when in a hurry and down to 2 amps when not in a hurry. The draw has been on a tango 45-10 on a Swift 16 castle 80. Both packs are consistant returning consistant flight times. EXCELLENT power choice!! The third pack that I have constructed from dewalt power packs is not as good, I have fried 3 different cells. could be unmatched cells.. I still LOVE the 123 system.
