I want to go to A123 cells, but have some nice 100 amp (Aveox) controllers that do not have an adjustable cutoff. The site 'fly electric' states that A123s can be taken down to 1.0 volts, although not recommended.
My controller measures the initial battery voltage and cutoff is 50% of that. Assuming a fully charged 4 cell pack is at 3.6 v. per cell or total of 14.4 volts. (I realize they drop to about 3.00 under load, but this doesn't affect the controller cutoff). The controller will then cut off at 50% of 14.4 or 7.2 volts. This is 1.8 volts per cell. Not quite as good as the recommended 2.0, but way above the 1.0.
I think this will work OK, particularly since I try not to fly to cutoff anyway. Your opinion?

Hi, Bob - I use a stop watch on the transmitter. So far, so good! When it sounds off, I land. I think you will be OK using your system. It's as good as any! Thanks - Pete/

I also use a timer when flying my helis with a123 packs. I find that if you do go into the cutoff zone, you loose almost all power very quickly. You will notice a huge drop in power and that means its just PAST time to land :-)
Even at that, the cells are more than 2.5 v each.

I have hit the low voltage stage MANY times and it does not create any major problems with the packs or lifespan.
